AISLING MURPHY 4 MILER

Tomorrow (21/05/2023), I’ll be participating in the 2nd edition of the Aisling Murphy 4 Miler exactly a year on from the first race. The race was established in memory of the late Aisling Murphy who tragically and needlessly lost her life while out for a run last January.

The shock of the event reverberating from around her loved ones out through the town where she lived; across the country stretching across the globe. It was not only an attack on womanhood which was awful enough in itself but an assault on our most basic of freedoms & affordable of exercises: Running! A pastime so many enjoy and use as a means of getting fit; clearing one’s head and socialising with others.

It certainly shook me enough to come out of my training hibernation and participate in my first & only race of last year. I finished in 219th place out of 534 participants with a time of 32:36, but that’s irrelevant when put in the light of why the race was happening in the first place.

For me this race represents a celebration of athletic freedom, a stride-nt fuck you to the evil forces out there who would seek to take that freedom away. Running is something anyone and everyone can do, simply because we can and in memory/honour of those who can’t. So, why don’t you come out and support those brave souls taking to the road tomorrow in Tullamore, Co. Offaly or stick on a pair of runners; register and run in the race yourself. You won’t regret it! 👍😁🙏🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️💪
