POETRY: THE FINEST SENTIMENTS OF OUR MIND OR SENTIMENTAL NOSTALGIA OF OUR SOUL

“Poetry is that sentiment of the soul, or faculty of the mind, which enables its possessor to appreciate and realize the heights and depths of human experience. It is the power to feel pleasure or suffer pain in all its exquisiteness and intensity.”

Orson F. Whitney

“Poetry is an art, and chief of the fine art; the easiest to dabble in, the hardest in which to reach true excellence.”

Edmund Clarence Stedman

Afternoon folks! 👋 Welcome back to my regular poetry quotes blog where we take a look at a couple of poetry quotes; break them down; analyse them and apply the lessons learned to our lives as poets and readers alike. 😁 Hope ye enjoy the read! 🤞🙏

Let’s take a look at Mr. Whitney’s quote first. “to appreciate the heights and depths of human experience”. And there’s a lot of them to go around! That’s what poetry equips you to do: it sharpens your mind & heightens your sensitivities. Hones your ability to sum up a myriad of experiences & emotions in a few short and concise words. It’s a literary roller coaster of emotional and experiential summations.

Basically the art of poetry allows us to feel all the pleasure and pain that life has to offer at it’s most beautiful and severe extremes. Let’s take; getting married & the birth of my 2 girls against the death of my mum; dad & brother. Opposite ends of the emotional spectrum yes, yet poetry enabled me to celebrate; honour and make sense of both sets of experiences in all their intensity; heartache and joy in equal measure.

Despite doing so, you might never reach perfection or excellence in the poetic craft as Mr. Stedman goes on to say. As while many write poetry few can ever claim to be true poets as that’s a lofty realm that some can ever truly claim to inhabit with the passion for words; attention to detail and devotion to the craft it requires.

But I think I’d be okay with that to be honest as the solace; strength; inspiration and wisdom one can find and give through writing & reading poetry is worth more than it’s weight in gold or any conferals of excellence. Not that this isn’t something we should aspire to. Indeed we should! 👍😁 But poetry transcends all that to reach to the heart of the matter. So whether you’re read or write poetry for it’s eloquence or sentiment, doesn’t matter to me. For as long as you leave the poem a different; better and happier person than you were beforehand then the poem has done it’s job! 😁

The link to it is below: https://kenhume31.wordpress.com/2022/10/02/poetry-home-of-extraordinary-effective-communication/?preview=true

POETRY: HOME OF EXTRAORDINARY & EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

Now I think poetry will save nothing from oblivion, but I keep writing about the ordinary because for me it’s the home of the extraordinary, the only home.

Philip Levine

Poetry is simply the most beautiful, impressive, and widely effective mode of saying things.

Matthew Arnold

Good afternoon folks! Welcome back to my latest poetry quotes blog where we take some favourite poetry quotes of mine; break them down; analyse them and apply the lessons learned to our lives as poets and readers alike. 🙏😁👍

To save us poets from any delusions of grandeur, Philip Levine wastes no time in reminding us that poetry won’t save anything (anyone) “from oblivion”. It won’t help us completely forget the suffering; pain and loss going on in the world/in our lives or numb us into a state of unconsciousness so we become unaware of what’s going on.

Instead it allows us the opportunity to write about the ordinary things going in our lives such as waking up in the morning; our jobs; going for walks; spending time with loved ones; food we eat etc. Stuff that might seem trivial or mundane to others. For it is in such common; everyday things that we can uncover something extraordinary; impressive and beautiful as Matthew Arnold goes on to declare. That’s the home of the true poet.

For that’s what poetry is! Impressive; beautiful & effective. Yes, effective! Poetry; spoken word can reveal to you, to others the innermost/complicated feelings and observations of you/writer/reader in a way that no other form of communication can. Because it’s short; concise; honest and cuts (through all the superfluous rubbish & flowery language) to the bone.

It can draw beauty & good out of the ugliest; most terrible; cruel and heartbreaking of events and emotions when you use the right words in the right way at the right time. It can heal us the hurt without removing the source. It allows us to feel the pain instead and still find hope; strength and comfort through it! Doesn’t matter where they are in the world. Now, that’s impressive! And extraordinary! 🤔👍😁👌👏❤️
